Its been a couple of days since I have been able to blog due to germs. Flu season is here and I will not get sick because I got my flu shot….or not. My husband going to work is like sending your child off to daycare. The germs have a way to find themselves into your home and the worst has come when your sweet little bundle is now sick. Caden started with a slight cough about five days ago. It has been getting better each day with some great home cold remedies and extra mommy love. When Caden started displaying cold symptoms I immediately started the following. Just a side note – Caden is completely breastfeed and currently sleeps in a rocker next to our bedside.
1. Vicks Steam Vaporizer with Steam Liquid – this works wonders and allows for baby to breath easy relieving congestion.
2. Hospital grade bulb syringe – I would get the most drained in mornings and evenings. I would also use the syringe habitually before breast feedings so the extra liquid in my babies nose would not disturb his ability to nurse. To get the best results be sure to ONLY slightly stick the syringe in and angle inward.
3. Steam Showers – No we didn’t put the baby in the shower. But we did put the baby in the rocker in the bathroom every time we hopped in the shower so Caden was able to clear his sinuses. Follow with the bulb syringe.
4. Natural Oils – I combined 4 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 drops of rosemary oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus, 2 drops of peppermint. After mixing I rubbed a bit on Caden’s chest right before bedtime. The eucalyptus aids in chest congestion, peppermint aids in nasal congestion, and rosemary aids in relaxation and rest. Yes, I know its tempting to add a couple more drops of rosemary, but pure oils are very intense so just 2 drops. You will find these oils at your neighborhood organic health store.
After about a week of doing the above Caden’s cold seems to barely bother him and he is showing minimal cold symptoms. Home remedies are definitely the way to go for the common cold.
